De Rejsende

The idea

De Rejsende is a national art and cultural heritage project that transforms materials and foundations from the historic Storstrøm Bridge into a permanent monumental artwork.

The project is envisioned as four 12–14 metre high sculptures placed on existing bridge piers near Masnedø – in the landscape between southern Zealand and Falster.

From infrastructure to cultural landmark

For almost 90 years, the old Storstrøm Bridge connected regions, people and businesses. De Rejsende carries that connection forward in a new form: from infrastructure to art, and from industrial heritage to a cultural landmark.

The sculptures are created by Danish sculptor Thomas Kadziola, known for Dodekalitten on Lolland.

Why it matters

The project brings together art, cultural heritage, sustainable transformation and regional identity. By reusing part of the bridge's physical and cultural legacy, De Rejsende creates a new destination visible from land, water and the transport corridor between Zealand and Falster.

The ambition is to create a lasting landmark with both local roots and international relevance.

From concept to realisation

The project is anchored in the independent institution De Rejsende and developed through a structured pre-project covering technical, legal and authority-related clarification, funding strategy, financing, operations and long-term maintenance.

The possibility of retaining four bridge foundations has been incorporated into the process around dismantling the old Storstrøm Bridge, giving the project a concrete physical basis for further development.
